the not so ugly ducklings

I love to read and write and I know there are a lot of other who do also! So, every Friday I am going to write a post on the topic of reading and writing. I invite you all to join me and link up your posts from the week devoted to books and writing. This link up will be open from Friday morning until the following Thursday.

So welcome to my first Read and Write Friday. The inspiration of this new link up is that I have decided to start a personal reading challenge, as as some of you know I have also planned to start writing a book. My hope is to have a book reviews, feature other blogs or discuss the progress of my own writing.

My new reading challenge:

I love crime novels, so I have decided to read the books on The Telegraph’s 50 Crime Writers to Read Before you Die list. I think this should prove to be interesting. However I am sure I would get bored with reading only crime novels. So, in between each I am going to read a free e-book. Now, I will need your help here. I need suggestions! If you know a good free e-book, let me know so I can add it to my list.

At the moment I am currently reading The Emerald Talisman by Brenda Pandos. You can download the e-book version for free. So you can expect that to be my first book review.

Have you read any of the books on the Crime Writers list? Can you suggest a good one to start with?

Whats going on with my writing?

Some of you may remember this post about how I am going to write a book over the remainder of the year. Well I was pretty motivated. Before my start dates I mapped out the characters, gave myself writing goals and all that fun stuff. Come the first day of writing.. nothing. Almost two weeks later, still nothing. I kind of just got stuck on where to start the first chapter.

Now I already have about 20 thousand words written for this book, however I am starting over. I have a pretty good idea as to where I need my story to go, but that first chapter is always the hardest for me. However, last night while trying to read I couldn’t stop thinking about my own book. So I promptly ended my bath and wrote down some notes about what I want to write in the first chapter. I am feeling inspired again and I hope to find some time today to get started!

So that is where I am with writing.

I can’t wait to see what you have been reading and writing about!
